Stretches May Help Arthritic Feet

Patients who have arthritis in their feet may benefit from performing specific exercises. It is beneficial to practice each stretch slowly, and stop if any pain is felt. A calf stretch is done by standing on a book that is a few inches away from the wall. A gentle stretch is generally felt while leaning against the wall with straight knees. This can help the calves, heels, and Achilles tendon to become stronger. Mild relief may be felt when the big toe is stretched. This is accomplished by sitting in a chair and crossing one foot over the opposite knee. When the heel is grasped with one hand, the toe is pulled back toward the ankle with the other hand. It is beneficial to hold the stretch for approximately 30 seconds, which is felt on the sole of the foot. If you have arthritis in your feet, there are several exercises and stretches that may help to bring relief. Please consult with a podiatrist who can help you manage this condition.

Arthritis can be a difficult condition to live with. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Centers for Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Arthritic Foot Care

Arthritis is a joint disorder that involves the inflammation of different joints in your body, such as those in your feet. Arthritis is often caused by a degenerative joint disease and causes mild to severe pain in all affected areas. In addition to this, swelling and stiffness in the affected joints can also be a common symptom of arthritis.

In many cases, wearing ill-fitting shoes can worsen the effects and pain of arthritis. Wearing shoes that have a lower heel and extra room can help your feet feel more comfortable. In cases of rheumatoid arthritis, the arch in your foot may become problematic. Buying shoes with proper arch support that contour to your feet can help immensely.

Alleviating Arthritic Pain

  • Exercises that stretch the foot can prevent further pain and injury and increase mobility
  • Most of the pain can be alleviated with anti-inflammatory drugs, heat, and topical medications
  • Massages can help temporarily alleviate pain.

It is best to see your doctor for the treatment that is right for your needs and symptoms. Conditions vary, and a podiatrist can help you determine the right method of care for your feet.

Common Causes of Ankle Pain

Ankle pain, whether it is caused by a sprain, fracture, or inflammation, can affect your ability to carry out daily activities. If you are unable to put weight on your ankle, it’s a good idea to seek immediate medical help. The number one cause of ankle pain is a sprain, most commonly in the ligament on the outside of the ankle. This is caused when the foot rolls inward, forcing the outside of the ankle to stretch beyond its normal range. A sprained ankle can be caused by stepping off the curb and landing incorrectly on your foot or during a sports or running injury. Rheumatoid arthritis is another major cause of ankle pain. This type of arthritis attacks the lining of the joints and results in painful inflammation. Osteoarthritis also causes ankle pain. In this form of arthritis, the cartilage between the bones deteriorates, causing extreme pain as the bones rub against each other. It more commonly affects people over 65 years old. Flat feet, ankle fractures, and Achilles tendonitis are other causes of ankle pain. Treatment for ankle pain depends on cause and severity. It is a good idea to consult a podiatrist as soon as possible for an examination and a diagnosis. The podiatrist can then determine the proper treatment options for you.

Ankle pain can have many different causes and the pain may potentially be serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with one of our podiatrists from Centers for Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Ankle pain is any condition that causes pain in the ankle. Due to the fact that the ankle consists of tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments, ankle pain can come from a number of different conditions.

Causes

The most common causes of ankle pain include:

  • Types of arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and gout)
  • Ankle sprains
  • Broken ankles
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Stress fractures
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis

Symptoms

Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.

Diagnosis

Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.

Foot Pain When Walking

There are a variety of reasons your feet may hurt while walking. If any of the several small bones in the feet become injured or misaligned, or the cushioning around them deteriorates, pain can be significant. Some of the more common foot maladies that can affect feet when walking are plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia, and turf toe. Plantar fasciitis causes a stabbing pain in the heel or bottom of the foot which is worse first thing in the morning. Metatarsalgia causes a sharp, aching pain in the ball of the foot just behind the toes and may also cause numbness or tingling in the toes. It can feel like there is an object, like a pebble in the shoe. Turf toe is a sprain of the big toe. Pain is worse when the toe is hyperextended, as it often is in a push-off position. It causes pain and stiffness in the toe, and perhaps swelling and bruising. Since there are other conditions that mimic these ailments, it is important to see a podiatrist for a proper evaluation and diagnosis. This type of doctor can help with all foot and ankle-related pain.

Sports related foot and ankle injuries require proper treatment before players can go back to their regular routines. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists of Centers for Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Sports Related Foot and Ankle Injuries

Foot and ankle injuries are a common occurrence when it comes to athletes of any sport. While many athletes dismiss the initial aches and pains, the truth is that ignoring potential foot and ankle injuries can lead to serious problems. As athletes continue to place pressure and strain the area further, a mild injury can turn into something as serious as a rupture and may lead to a permanent disability. There are many factors that contribute to sports related foot and ankle injuries, which include failure to warm up properly, not providing support or wearing bad footwear. Common injuries and conditions athletes face, including:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Plantar Fasciosis
  • Achilles Tendinitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains

Sports related injuries are commonly treated using the RICE method. This includes rest, applying ice to the injured area, compression and elevating the ankle. More serious sprains and injuries may require surgery, which could include arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery. Rehabilitation and therapy may also be required in order to get any recovering athlete to become fully functional again. Any unusual aches and pains an athlete sustains must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

Do You Suffer From Painful Feet?

Painful deformities, such as hammertoes, can be treated. Stop living with foot pain, and have beautiful feet again!

It can be common for older people to fall. Many patients who fall may escape from having a serious injury happen but can develop a fear of falling from the stress it can cause. One of the most effective fall prevention techniques is to wear shoes that fit correctly. This is instrumental in maintaining balance and possibly avoiding unwanted foot conditions. Additional methods can include getting routine physical and eye examinations which are helpful in monitoring existing medications and eyeglasses and frequently participating in a gentle exercise program. Some people also find it beneficial to install grab bars in the shower and toilet area, in addition to removing worn rugs and clutter from the living area. Eating small meals during the day may help to maintain proper energy and strength, and this may help to prevent falling. The feet may become injured when a fall occurs, which may cause difficulty in completing daily activities. If you would like to learn about the importance of implementing fall prevention techniques into your lifestyle, please confer with a podiatrist.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with one of our podiatrists from Centers for Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.

Broken Toes and Treatment Methods

Broken toes are a common injury. They may happen because of a heavy object falling on one or more of the toes, as well as stubbing a toe into a piece of furniture. There is often immediate bruising and swelling, and it can be difficult to move. A bone that protrudes from the skin can look deformed and will need immediate medical attention. If the fracture is severe, as in the preceding description, surgery may be necessary to align the bone back into its proper place. For mild breaks, the buddy taping system is often effective. This is done by taping the affected toe to the toe next to it, which provides the necessary stability as the healing process occurs. If the big toe is broken, some patients need to have it put in a cast for extra support. Using crutches may be recommended and this is helpful in keeping all weight off the affected toe while being able to walk. Severely broken toes may have blood that is trapped under the toenail possibly causing extreme pain. This can require the blood to be drained through a small hole that is made in the nail or it may be necessary to remove the nail. It is suggested that patients who have broken a toe see a podiatrist who can effectively treat this condition, ultimately leading to proper healing.

Broken toes may cause a lot of pain and should be treated as soon as possible. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Centers for Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is a Broken Toe?

A broken toe occurs when one or more of the toe bones of the foot are broken after an injury. Injuries such as stubbing your toe or dropping a heavy object on it may cause a toe fracture.

Symptoms of a Broken Toe

  • Swelling
  • Pain (with/without wearing shoes)
  • Stiffness
  • Nail Injury

Although the injured toe should be monitored daily, it is especially important to have a podiatrist look at your toe if you have severe symptoms. Some of these symptoms include worsening or new pain that is not relieved with medication, sores, redness, or open wounds near the toe.
